It has been a strange old time here at the University lately, the entire
University is being restructured, and with restructuring comes job changes. We
are loosing our three admin staff, Gaynor, Debbie and Kaz, who have been here
for the entire time I have been here, so it has been a rather emotional few
weeks preparing for the change, and they are even moving all of their furniture
and someone even came down yesterday to unplug Debbie’s computer . . . . . . .
They have all been inundated with gifts and cards from both staff and
students, and I have been putting off even accepting that they are going,
because it will be the end of an era, as they irreplaceable.
So I had given great thought to what I was going to give them as I
wanted them to have something to keep, and to remind them of how much they will
be missed, but to also wish them the best of luck in their new jobs, up the
road in the main campus.
I had been looking at lots of different ways of giving good luck, and the horseshoe was something that I have always associated with good luck gifts that you give at wedding and exams etc. . . . . one of my earliest memories of a wedding was when my mum gave me a black cat and a horseshoe to give to one of their friends on their wedding day, so I had a real good look into the tradition of the horseshoes and which way up or down they go, and there is no definitive saying on which one is right, and this was something I needed to think about when making these, to allow the wearer to choose the way they would be worn to bring them good luck.
They can be worn both ways just by tipping the shoe.
I just gave them to Debbie and Gaynor,
this is the last day they will be in the building together, and they both loved
them, well Debbie cried when she saw the box, but it does remind me of how
special handmade pieces are, whether they are silver, knitted or sewn, its
always the thought and love that counts. . . . .
. . . . . . .and talking about love,
I recieved this in the post this morning, form my Mam! Over christmas we did lots of knitting together and after I left it was clear that the knitting bug has recaptured her, and she has has been knitting me cabled cardies, fingerless gloves (which I am curently wearing, this office has an issue with the heating) and today I recieved a lush crochet hat . . . . . which took her an hour. . . . . it makes me sick! She is so good at this stuff and she hasn't even picked up needles or a hook in 10 years! she is amazing! so im putting my orders in for lots of colours, and scouring my knitting books for some lovely patterns.
